About Williams MMA Academy
Williams MMA was established in 2016, but its history goes back much further. The current owner and head instructor, Corey Williams, started training 20 years before in the summer of ’96. He attended the Academy of Martial arts under Sensei Robert Spencer. The Academy trained students in a Polynesian originated, Kenpo-Karate style. At its core, it carried the mindset of evolving with the times and with what works in practical application. As jujitsu started dominating the competitive fight scene, submission grappling was introduced into the system. The added style was derived from Danzan Ryu Jujitsu, another popular style of martial arts in Hawaii brought by Japanese practitioner Seishiro Okazaki. As the system refined itself, Robert changed the name of the school to Shin Gi Do Kenp-jujitsu (shin gi do translating to “the way of faith and truth.”) This was truly a mixed martial arts that kept the core values of respect, discipline, and humility from its traditional heritage.
It is in Shin Gi Do that Corey achieved his third degree black belt under Robert Spencer, and became an instructor at the school. Overtime, the system continued to be refined and eventually, Corey became co-owner with Rob. Mixed martial arts was exploding in popularity at the time, and when Rob was ready to retire and have Corey take things over, Corey decided to rebrand the school from “Kenpo-jujitsu” to “American Mixed Martial Arts.”
The current system continues to follow in the mindset of staying dynamic as knowledge and understanding of fighting grows. Williams MMA does its best to provide individual students with personalized training that allows them to be successful. Humans are incredibly diverse in the physical and mental makeup, and it is imperative that instructors meet people wherever they are in life and give them the tools and strategies to be successful on and off the mat.
